Selinunte
The history of Selinunte is linked to that of Segesta, as
the two cities were rivals. Founded in the second half of
the VII century B.C., Selinunte took its name from the Selinos
river as well as from sélinon, the Greek word for the
wild celery growing in the area.
The archeological site, considered to be one of the most outstanding
in the Mediterranean region, includes the Acropolis and some
Doric temples, which are impressive examples of classical
architecture.
